The main operation of the National Observatory is located on the very top of the highest mountain in Thailand , Doi Intanon in Chiang Mai, Northern of Thailand, which is also renowned for its superb climate and tourist attractions. NARIT's observatory is scheduled to officially open on the 5 th of December 2008, which marks the 80 th birthday of King Bhumibol. Apart from the main observatory and research building there is one more building associated with NARIT, namely the Information Technology and Training Centre for Astronomy situated at Headquarters of Doi Intanon National Park.
Vision : A research-emphasis institute providing a collaborative network for developing and strengthening knowledge in astronomy, so as to meet international standards. This will also provide an education and learning culture in astronomy for the public and thus encourage them to seek further involvement with science and technology.
Mission : 1. Undertaking and supporting relevant research in astronomy to enhance the competitiveness in science and technology of the country that is both authoritative and stimulating as to be recognized internationally 2. Coordinating and facilitating strategic collaboration and linkage between educational institutions and related organizations at both national and international level. 3. Promoting scientific awareness and understanding for the public. 4. Conducting and coordinating integrated research with other areas of knowledge that will be beneficial to both society and academic. 5. NARIT consists of 2 locations : • National Observatory is located at the highest spot in Thailand . As 2,550 meters above the mean sea level, the observatory has superb seeing conditions suitable for advanced research in Astronomy and Astrophysics. The automated telescope with 2.4 meters clear aperture, single mirror type, will be one of the largest and most advanced telescopes located within Asia . Together with robotic capability as well as a range of state-of-the-art instruments, the observatory will therefore play a significant role in supporting cutting edge research and international collaborations. • Information Technology and Training Center is located at the Headquarters of Doi Intanon National Park.
